Russell Cave National Monument Alabama

Russell Cave National Monument Alabama, 1 May day   More Pictures  |  Map  |  GPS

Overview Russell Cave was home to prehistoric peoples and gives an idea of what the lives of early North American inhabitants were like. Many beleve the artifacts date from 6500 B.C. to 1450 A.D. The cave site itself contains archeaological remains that many think are the most complete record of prehistoric cultures in the Southeastearn United States.

Outdoor Activities include ranger led tours of the cave shelter and demonstrations of prehistoric tools and weapons. The walk to the cave shelter is nearly 300 yards long.
Rangers present demonstrations of spear throwing, blowguns and the techniques of pump and bow drills. They also cover flintknapping, and show you how to grind corn and nuts using pestels. You can also join in and throw a real spear if you like though the line can be long.

Picnics can be enjoyed in the large open area in front of the visitor center. They have a few shady tables.
Large groups are welcome though there is not a lot of resources for them with most everything being first come first serve.

Hiking You can hit the Nature Hike along North Alabama Birding Trail #44. It is a partially paved round trip trail with steep terrain that is a little over a mile long. Typical Alabama terrain with plentiy of smaller wild life and big variety of plants.

Vanabode Special Notes: The cave is wheelchair accessable.

Vanabode Special Notes: Russell Cave National Monument is a typical day park where overnight stays are impossible. Children and those with no interest in this type of historical data will be bored. Nearby cities and properties can be appropriate for Vanaboding though the warmer months can be rainy and muggy. Not my idea of a great place to Vanabode.
