I have a chevy express 1500 with 528000 miles, the speedometer will randomly drop down and the ABS and brake lights will come on with warning bells. It seems to run ok but I don't know what is causing it. It has the original engine but the trans was replaced at 325000. Any ideas?

Could it be the speedometer cable, kinked, rusted, or loose? What do you do with the Van that puts so many miles on it? You did not say what year it was, but could it also be an electronic part that has never been changed - they used to call it the "brain"? Also my van now has 160,000 range miles should I switch to "high mileage" or "synthetic" oil changes to help me get the kind of miles you got?

The van is a 2005. I am a energy management technician and i travel thru out the east coast. I believe the speedometer is control by sensors attached to the trans and rear, which i am having replaced on Monday. Yesterday the speedometer totally dropped out and the trans was having difficulty changing gears. I did switch to high mileage oil at about 150000. But i change the oil and complete service every 4000 miles.

So it was the speed sensor attached to the hub on the transmission. One bolt holds it in place and the wires are connected with a plug. Thank goodness!
