Perhaps the granddaddy of the industry is a company that bears the same name as the industry, Motor Coach Industries. Based in Illinois, this Midwest company was started in 1933 by a repair shop owner, Harry Zoltok. Zoltok designed an 11-passenger body on a Packard chassis.

The sketch be made gave birth to Fort Garry Motor Body and Paint Works Limited. They were renamed Motor Coach Industries in 1941, and was shortly taken over by Greyhound of Canada. Through this, advancements to the buses were made, including the creation of the first 40-foot bus, which today is the standard. Much later, in 1994, the company’s leadership was changed, this time being bought by the Mexican company Grupo Dina. Under this umbrella, a new era of motorcoaches emerged, including more luxurious models. In 1999, the company was bought by its’ current owners, Joseph Little John & Levy.

Today, the company is still the leading manufacturer of coaches. Still headquartered in its original location in Schaumburg, Illinois, MCI has plants in Winnipeg and Pembina and six sales centers and fleet support services across the country. The company employs over 2,000 people that make and service coaches and their customers.

There are many uses for motorcoaches, thus people who buy a MCI bus for sale have different needs. Over the years, there have been many changes to the look and feel of MCI busses, allowing these many needs to be met. Since most companies that operate motorcoach service are small business, buying a used MCI bus for sale is a common practice. According the ABA, 65% of carriers operate less than ten coaches. Most companies, 96% of them, offer charter service, which means the private use of the bus by a pre-formed group such as a school or church group. And, 12% of motorcoaches are used scheduled service between predetermined cities that travel from terminal to terminal. These are used by people commuting to cities for work, or for travelers.

That said, it’s no doubt that this industry in on the rise, and is one with rich history.
