This page from my master list of all Las Vegas articles I wrote while developing Vanabode as the best travel vehicle for cheap easy long term road trips.

Golden Nugget Hotel Las Vegas

Golden Nugget is the finest downtown hotel and casino having won various awards year after year. Now they have upstaged themselves again. Yes a great new pool! You can tell I am from Florida originally because I am always drawn to the water at every casino. No pool? Then I don't want to be there, especially in Vegas! Well this is a doozy to describe because they actually wrap the pool around a 200,000-gallon aquarium. Parking is not good for Vanabode camping though so stay at the hotel or just visit for a few hours.

So you can sit there in the water in a low rider lounge chair and watch sharks swim by. The whole deal is 3 stories high and includes waterfalls, and for adventure a waterslide that goes THROUGH the inside of the aquarium. So as you slide through the sharks you squirt out on the other side into a wonderful cool pool in the well appointed deck area. Grab a drink, hit the hot tub, cool off again, rinse and repeat. Like the big strip casino hotels you can rent a private cabana for the day poolside if you like.

Golden Nugget Hotel downtown Las Vegas picture

Golden Nugget Hotel in downtown Las Vegas has a club called Gold Diggers which parties on the 2nd floor right above Fremont Street.

Golden Nugget has some of the most colorful past since it was built over 65 years ago. It is one of the original casinos built in the REAL wild wild west. Originally a wooden structure facing a dusty dirt road and serving every rough neck that came by on their way to California now it is actually quite elegant, even decadent by downtown standards.

Over the years they have steadily spent 100's of millions of dollars to keep her shiny gold world as fine as can be. I like the old world charm combined with modern amenities plus there is a lot less smoke in the Nugget than other "low ceiling" downtown casinos.

The poker room was shown on TV numerous times and it is smoke free. I like it but prefer the much larger Orleans poker room for taking the locals money. The slots seemed to pay out well though so I would come here and play the video poker for sure.
