This page from my master list of all Las Vegas articles I wrote while developing Vanabode as the best travel vehicle for cheap easy long term road trips.

Wynn Golf Course

Wynn Golf Course is the second golf course Steve Wynn has built with that hotshot designer, Tom Fazio. The first course was the award-winning, elite Shadow Creek Golf Course, which is now part of MGM properties. I don't play but while we travel here for months at a time each year and put these articles together for those fellow campers that do. Both courses are picture book designed with waterfall, rivers and lake. Wynn does everything in grand style and his latest golf course is top notch.

Photo taken from the Wynn Towers of hole 18 of the Wynn Golf Course with its giant waterfall, rivers and lake. The course is over 1 mile wide. It feels like one is golfing in Colorado, not on the Strip in Las Vegas.

To golf at Wynn, you must be staying at the Wynn Hotel and Casino, or be the guest of a hotel guest. Wynn rarely waves this requirement; you can try during the middle of the week, maybe you'll get lucky and get on the course. Fees are expensive unless you have been comped. To get comped you must be a VIP, or gamble a lot. Golfers who don't want to pay these prices will have to golf off-Strip. Try highly-rated Paiute Golf Course; it's about 35 minutes from the Strip.

Wynn Golf Course is 18 holes and covers 138 acres. There are 11 holes with water. It's over 7,000 yards from the tips. To create dramatic elevation changes, over 800,000 cubic yards of dirt was moved around. Wynn course is a par-70 with slope rating of 124. The greens are planted with Penn Links Bentgrass made to USGA specifications. Tifway II Hybrid Bermuda grass covers the fairways. 6,000 trees were brought in from North Carolina to make this course fully tree lined and private. The Wynn Golf Course was completed in 2005.

There are actually 2 golf courses on the Strip. The other is Bali Hai Golf Club. It sits at the other end of the Strip, and is a paradise with a whopping 7 acres of water and over 10,000 tropical plants. There is one more course just off the Strip near Bali Hai; it's called Callaway Golf Center. It is a 9-hole course that is good for practice and convenient. It also has a golf school, Giant Academy, for affordable golf lessons of every kind, from video to pro.

Insider Secret - Sometimes they let you play here during the middle of the week without having to be a guest at Wynn Hotel Casino. Midweek has lower green fees than weekends.

Wynn Golf Course at the Wynn is one of two golf courses on the Strip. The other is Bali Hai Golf Club, at the other end of the Strip. I would golf everyday at the Wynn if I could afford it, as would a lot of other golfers. With its lakes, wide rolling rivers, 50 foot high waterfalls, forest of trees and wide stretches of wide fairways, the Wynn Golf Course is the easiest on the eyes. But not on the pocketbook.

First, you must be staying at the Wynn, or be the guest of a hotel guest. Next you must fork out hundreds and hundreds of dollars. But is it worth it? Some will tell you the course is for high rollers only. Note that scorecards have no diagrams; tall trees and barriers keep intruders from catching a glimpse of even a back hole. It's a hush-hush affair from start to finish.

Wynn Golf Course at the Wynn is Steve Wynn's second golf course. The first was Shadow Creek Golf Course, that elite, secretive oasis in the desert which is now a MGM Mirage property. Both have waterfalls, rivers, rocks and trees, lots of trees. Both were built by Tom Fazio, ASGCA. Fazio completed the Wynn Golf Course in 2005.

This first class 18-hole golf course covers 138 acres, is over 7,000 yards from tip to tip, has 11 holes with water, par-70, slope rating of 124. PennLinks Bentgrass greens were made to USGA specifications while Tifway II Hybrid Bermuda covers the fairways and tees. 6,000 trees were brought in from North Carolina. The idea behind the course is that you won't believe you are in the middle of a desert on the Strip playing golf.

At Wynn Golf Course at the Wynn, it's said that hole 11 is Steve Wynn's favorite, while other golfers are passionate about hole 15 with its little wishbone stream protecting the green. I like hole 18 with the waterfall. I just hit the ball straight into the fall to see if I can knock it over. It's so real it's unreal. If I could I would play everyday at Wynn.

Best of all, golfers need never lack a reason or a time to come to Las Vegas, as tournaments are held all year around. So, go ahead, plan your trip to Vegas around golf (I don't I plan my Vanabode camping around the temperature!)

Steve Wynn has tournaments that are televised. They go by names like The Ultimate Game at Wynn Las Vegas. Keeping in the bigger than life Steve Wynn style, the payout was $2 million dollars. That is a greater payout than the U.S. Open, The Masters, The British Open or the PGA Tournament. Ultimate Game was open to any male or female golfer who has never been a fully-exempt member of the PGA European Tour, Champions Tour, PGA TOUR, or Nationwide Tour. The entry fee was a cool $50,000 per golfer. Steve Wynn knows the value of his Wynn Golf Course.
